To a 24 mL test tube, add 5 mL conc. sulfuric acid. Slowly, and carefully, layer 5 mL abs. EtOH down the wall of the test tube to create a biphasic mixture. Add a few granules of potassium permanganate, and observe the “thunderstorm” at the solvent interface.
6 KMnO4(aq) + 9 H2SO4(aq) → 6 MnSO4(aq) + 3 K2SO4(aq) + 9 H2O(l) + 5 O3(g)
