This is our most recent morning routine.
Every morning, without a doubt, we have tangles and frizz.
We are currently using a satin bonnet at night time for Eva (4 years old) and a silk pillowcase for Isla (2 years old)
Both of these are helping, but the bonnet doesn’t always stay on and Isla doesn’t always sleep on her pillowcase…
In the mornings, I’m usually tight for time so a quick, easy routine is important for us.
I section the hair into two (half up, half down) and tie with a hair band. I don’t always use clips because my hands get quite wet and slippery which makes it really difficult to clip, and unclip the clips. So a hair band will do nicely.
I start off by adding fresh water into our water bottle. Always refresh your spray bottle with fresh water because bacteria grows quickly overnight in water so its important to use fresh water every time. I don’t fill the bottle right up as I find I always waste loads.
I add a few drops of conditioner into the water bottle – in this video I am using Kinky Curly Knot Today Leave in Detangler. This can be diluted into water and also used on its own as a leave in conditioner after you’ve washed your little ones hair.
Shake the bottle well (give it to the kids – they’ll love this part) and make sure its fully mixed together.
Spray lightly onto the hair. I have found through a lot of trial and error, not to spray too much water onto the hair when refreshing curls in the morning. You don’t want a wet look or loose volume, so spray lightly! Let your fingers do the work and detangle.
After spraying the hair, I’ll begin to detangle with my fingers. I never use a comb in the mornings because this is what creates a lot of frizz and looses the shape of the curls.
Get as many knots and tangles out with your fingers and if need be grab a comb for any tough parts, but don’t comb all the hair through to the ends.
Once I’ve got most tangles out, I apply the styler. I use anything from milks to light creams (depending on your child’s texture and what works for their hair). I apply a small amount and smooth through right to the ends.
Once i’ve done this all over, I grab an Afro comb/pick and fluff from the roots to create volume and bounce.
I only fluff the roots with the Afro comb and avoid the mid/end of their hair. This again looses the shape of the curls and creates frizz.
Any questions, feel free to comment!
