This video will show you a homemade fuel gauge I made for my moped. Basic tutorial included.
The main body, including the mounting ring is aluminium and was made with a lathe.
The float was made from a fishing net float. I had to experiment with different sizes to get it to work right.
The ball bearing is originally for use in an Yo-yo, and the glass lens is for flashlights. Both was purchased from DealExtreme.
To my knowledge, this is the only tutorial in the world on how to make a fuel gauge of this kind, and I may be the first one to have made one (as a DIY project) from the bottom.
A challenging project with a satisfying result
29-03/13 Some minor changes had to be made.
The gasoline would flow into the body when I shook the moped, thus making the paint vanish, and the rubber gasket did not seal well enough. I solved these problems by gluing the ball bearing to the body and I found some gasket silikone which I made a new gasket with.
30-03/13 Gluing the bearing did not prevent the gasoline from flowing into the body, so untill I find gasoline resistant paint, I can’t have paint on the engravings.
28-06/13 A minor problem has now occured: the float does no longer float. So basically it’s no longer functional.
05-07/13 The rubber gasket did not make it leak proof, so I applied gasket silicone around the whole part where the body is laying on the tank, and I hope this will make it leak proof until further development
08-07/13 Last update: I removed the gauge permanently. It stoped working, and I couldn’t fill the tank completely full as the gas would flow into the panel and out under the glass lens. So I removed it and made a panel of stainless steel which I mounted over the hole.
Turned out to be a fun project with a not so satisfying result
