This is one simple way to perform electrolysis of water. You’ll need a plastic tub, 2 test tubes, 3 large rubber bands, baking soda, duct tape, 9 volt battery and clip-on leads, and 2 sticks of graphite (or 2 pencils). Graphite can be obtained in an arts/crafts store (it’s used for drawing). Or if you want to do it the hard way you can disassemble a 6 volt (lantern) battery. The hydrogen tube will fill up twice as fast (because each “broken” water molecule has 2 hydrogen atoms for each oxygen atom).
