for the most recent edition of sculpture by the sea in aarhus, denmark, indian artist arunkumar H G comments on a disposable lifestyle, which — although convenient — creates an unhealthy and unsustainable environment. ‘there is a huge imbalance in between our sustainable ecology and our contemporary living practices.’ arunkumar says. using more than 70,000 bottle tops collected from cities around the world, the artist has formed ‘droppings and the dam(n)’ along the danish coast.
the colorful caps have been carefully stacked and layered using steel wires to tie them into a vertical configuration, transforming the disused material into an immersive, horseshoe-shaped pavilion for visitors to experience and enjoy. although the brightly-colored installation and its undulating shape give off an inviting and whimsical sensibility, ‘droppings and the dam(n)’ shows the enormous scale of waste produced by our lifestyle produces, and symbolizes the harmful effects of disposable materials on our environment.
