As many of you are probably aware, the 2014 Salomon S-LAB Adv Skin3 5 Set was one of my favorite packs from last year. This is the updated version with some minor tweaks. It’s about 30% lighter (due to the removal of some seams and fabrics), the pockets have been resized a bit, there’s a new battery pocket up on the right shoulder and the sternum straps are a bit different. The big question is whether these changes have helped make this pack an improvement from last year’s version or if they hurt it.
While the pack features Salomon’s high-level fabrics and build quality, I have to say that the new version is held back by it’s stretchiness, front pockets that go too deep into the back of the bottle pockets, the less-stable chest strap design and higher volume bottle pockets that let the bottles or soft flasks fall too deep. With the big gap of space along the front of the shoulder straps those chest straps could be moved up and solve a lot of these issues.
Overall, the pack is still a rockstar amongst a market full of non-stretchy, non-conforming packs that lack all sorts of longterm comfort. There are some other models coming out from other manufacturers that I’m looking forward to, but until I get hands on any of them, this is still my go-to – though if given the option, the 2014 model just squeaks ahead in my opinion.
